    Description

    Offered here is an
    etched 185
gram crusted complete slice of the Gibeon
iron meteorite. In 1836 an English captain collected fragments of the Gibeon meteorite in Namibia and sent them to John Herschel, whose analysis confirmed for the first time the extraterrestrial nature of the material. The Gibeon meteorite is composed of an iron-nickel alloy containing large amount of cobalt and phosphorous.  The crystal structure of the Gibeon provides a classic example of a fine octahedrite with a beautiful Widmanstatten pattern when etched.  The Gibeon meteorite is prized by collectors and designers of jewelry due to its beauty.  This slice of the prehistoric fall Gibeon meteorite
speaks to the individual characteristics of this iron meteorite which measures approximately
    120mm x 90mm x 3mm thick.
