The pallasitic peridot is widely recognized as the only mineral from outer space that can be faceted into a gemstone. This incredibly rare material is believed to have formed in the boundary between the iron core and the silicon rich crust of a very large asteroid. Eventually, the asteroid was broken up and the some of the material arrived at earth, and survived a fiery descent through earth’s atmosphere in the form of a rare class of meteorites know as pallasites. The gemstone is scientifically separated from the host iron nickel matrix and the resulting gem, has been given a distinct classification from the Gemological Institute of America, designated pallasitic peridot or extraterrestrial peridot. The GIA also has concluded that gemstones of this material, although small, are to be counted as among the rarest of all gemstones. These stones are distinct from terrestrial peridot in several ways, one they contain acicular inclusions that do not occur in terrestrial peridot, if properly oriented some stones may display asterism and if properly oriented in a cabochon cut, they can contain a four-rayed star or cat’s eye.
