Guelmim-Oued Noun, Morocco
Find: 2017 Aug 20
Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5)
History
: Mohamed Karmoud (and Ouhira Mohamed, Ourbaa Mohamed, and Lahcen Ourbaa) found the sample while they were searching the desert near Tan Tan on August 20, 2017. John Higgins purchased these samples February 2020 in Zagora, Morocco, from Mohamed Elguirah.
Physical characteristics
: The sample comprises three interlocking pieces that fit together. The total weight of the three pieces is 1524 g. The exterior of the sample is covered in caliche in some places and shows relict fusion crust in other places.
Petrography
: Description and classification (A. Love,
App
) Sample has a recrystallized chondritic texture composed of indistinct chondrules and fragments with an average apparent diameter of 358 µm, n=115. Sample is very porous (~8.4 vol% pore space) in comparison to other ordinary chondrites. Secondary albitic plagioclase has an average length of 41 µm (n=19).
Geochemistry
: (A. Love,
App
) Olivine (Fa
17.4±0.1
, Fe/Mn=33.9±0.5, n=6); low Ca pyroxene (Fs
16.0±0.1
Wo
1.6±0.1
, n=6).
Classification
: Ordinary chondrite (H5, C-S1, W4). Based on mineral compositions, chondrule size, grainsize of secondary plagioclase and textures this is an H5.
Specimens
: John Higgins holds the main masses. 3 slices weighing 45.8 g a polished mount and a polished thin section are on deposit at
