U.S.M.C. M4A2 SHERMAN TANK IN THE PACIFIC
The M4 Sherman with its powerful 75mm main gun and strong armor was more than a match for any Japanese tanks of WWII, as well as their anti-tank artillery. Mid 1944 saw the replacement of most of the Marine Corps tank battalions earlier M3 Stuarts with the more powerful, heavier armored M4 Shermans. Although easily 'out-gunning' the enemy armor, a new threat erupted when Japanese suicide teams, wrapped themselves with explosives and threw themselves under or onto the American tanks. Marine Corps 'tankers' improvised a whole range of field modified methods to keep the enemy at bay. One common practice in the Pacific was to attach thick timber planks on each side of the tank to ward off the enemy attaching adhesive or magnetic mines and explosives. These heavy timber planks also provided protection against Japanese anti-tank guns. This New King & Country Sherman tank has also been camouflaged in shades of olive drab... rust-colored brown and desert sand - typical of the U.S.M.C. pattern during combat operations during the latter phase of World War II. This King & Country model also comes complete with the rare sighting of a USMC tank commander appearing just above the rim of his turret hatch... to get a better look at the enemy. Together with a high quality full-color presentation box, this King & Country Pacific Sherman is a welcome reinforcement for all of our fighting Marine riflemen battling their way up from the beach... into the jungle... and all the way to Tokyo!

King & Country and Picacho Peak Collectibles are proud to pay tribute, through the release of the "Bloody Tarawa" series, to the brave Marines who fought and died during the 'Island Hopping' campaigns in the Pacific. The battles that followed these amphibious assault sere among the most intense and brutal combat operations experienced by any of the U.S. armed forces anywhere, anytime in their history.
The bloody cost of victory was also high... almost 20,000 Marines were killed or missing and nearly 70,000 wounded in action between 1941 and 1945. In the war in the Pacific no quarter was asked and seldom was any given... by either side.
Guadalcanal... Tarawa... Okinawa... Iwo Jima are just a few of the many battle honors the U.S.M.C. can claim on their epic campaign journey across the Pacific.
King & Country and Picacho Peak Collectibles are proud to present some of the latest USMC releases to add to the already impressive collection of Marines in action that are currently available. These newest released 'Leathernecks' are well supported by the newest armored vehicle... the mighty M4 Sherman Tank complete with its 75mm main gun and a partially exposed tank commander observing the enemy. Sherman tanks, just like this one, supplied the Marines with much-needed, close quarter fire support as well as providing welcome shelter and cover as the 'Leathernecks' themselves move forward to attack the enemy positions.
    All of these ‘
    Leathernecks
’ have shed their backpacks and are equipped with a mixture of weapons…
the M1 ‘Garand’ rifle, the M1A1 Thompson Sub-machine Gun, the M1 Carbine, the M1911 Colt Automatic Pistol, the M1918 B.A.R. (Browning Automatic Rifle), a M1 Flame Thrower... and an M1897 Winchester Shot Gun.
    HISTORICAL NOTE
    :
U.S.M.C. M4A2 SHERMAN TANK IN THE PACIFIC
    The
    M4 Sherman
    , officially
    Medium Tank, M4
, was the most numerous battle tank
    used by the United States
and some other Western Allies in World War II. The Sherman tank saw extensive service by the U.S. Army in the European Theater and was first used in the Pacific Theater by the United States Marine Corps during the Battle of Tarawa.

BLOODY TARAWA' THE BATTLE OF TARAWA ATOLL
    The Battle of TARAWA
was fought between 20-23 November 1943 and was part of the U.S. invasion of the
    Gilbert Islands
    in the central Pacific region.
Although not the first time U.S. forces had met the Japanese in battle, it was the first time they had faced serious opposition to an amphibious landing.
    On the tiny
    Tarawa Atoll
    more than
    4,500
    J
apanese defenders were well-supplied and expertly dug-in and fought virtually to the last man.
Opposing them were the men of the
    2nd Marine Division
    ,
    U.S.M.C.
, some of America’s toughest and best fighting forces.
    Of the approximately
    12,000 Marines
    who assaulted Tarawa
    3,146
    became casualties with almost
    1,000 killed
    and over
    2,000 wounded.
That was the deadly toll of just
    76
hours of bloody, brutal, non-stop combat... against Imperial Japanese forces who would rather die than surrender.

    SHERMANS IN
    THE BATTLE OF TARAWA
    NOVEMBER 20
    th
    -23
    rd
    1943
    T
he first Marine use of the Sherman Tank was on Tarawa. The tanks were M4A2 small hatch tanks; these tanks were issued with no training, and the crews of the I Marine Amphibious Corps Tanks Battalion had sixty days in the states to learn how to use their tanks. Then the island they ended up pre landing had no place for them to drive the tanks to train on them. Thus they went into combat with no real training with the Marine ground troops with whom they were going to fight. The tanks had no waterproofing, no deep wading trunks, and could only drive through 40 inches of water. The Marine Shermans also had the same problem the Army Shermans had in Europe; the tanks radios were not on the same frequency as the infantry units below the battalion level, however the tank commander could talk to aircraft. They decided they would only need one company of medium tanks, the rest of the battalion would be made up of M3A1 light tanks. This single mixed battalion would be the only Tanks to support the assault.
    T
he Marines learned a lot of hard lessons about using tanks effectively during the Battle of Tarawa; the biggest problem was communication with the supporting infantry units. Another major problem was the vulnerability of the tanks to water damage. It was also clear, the infantry units needed to train with the tanks they would be supported by in combat. The Marines of C Company had been thrown into combat with little training on the tanks, but still proved to be key players in the conquest of the island. The Marines would begin applying the lessons they learned, but not before their next use of the M4, this time M4A1s at Cape Gloucester, a swampy, jungle island in the Solomons, and not the best place for any tanks, but the M4 would prove it's worth there as well.
    B
y the end of the World War II and the war in the Pacific, the Marines would be experts in employing the tank & infantry team concept. The Marines, like their European Army counterparts, used '
    Yankee ingenuity'
to modify their Shermans to help them survive combat situations that the tank designers had no idea they would ever see. These modifications included improvised waterproofing, deep wading kits, battle field modifications such as add-on armor made of wood and concrete, and the use of spikes and screens over the hatches to help prevent the Japanese from using explosives directly on the periscope ports and hatches.

Not quite as ubiquitous as the Kubelwagen, the Schwimmwagen was still a fairly common sight on German battlefronts on the East and Western Fronts. This new model has the top cover up and has been given a thin coat of whitewash over its original grey exterior. A well-wrapped up driver and a standing Feldgendarme complete the set. - See more at: schwimmwagen-winter-p-1098.html#sthash.YJMI6wwJ.dpuf

Note: Although we have never traveled to Pearl Harbor, nor any of the battle sites of the Pacific Theatre, we have visited the stunning U.S.M.C. National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, VA which is near the Marine Corps base in Quantico, VA. In addition,
to previously visiting All Five of the Landing Beaches along the Cotentin Peninsula and many of the historical locations, and museums in an around Normandy, we have also used the same format on several occasions, including our recent 2019 trip, to visit the Bastogne area, including the Baugnez '44 Museum (located near the site of the Malmedy Massacre), The December 44 Museum in La Gleize, Muse'e de la Bataille, in La Roche-en-Ardenne, The Bastogne War Museum, the still existing foxholes of the 502nd and 506th P.I.R. and the pastoral surrounding area in Belgium. We have found both the French and the Belgian people, especially in the towns in Normandy and the area in and around Bastogne, to be very friendly and still grateful to the Allies, especially the American forces, for their liberation… despite the huge loss of life and property damage suffered by the French and Belgian civilians. In addition, should you plan to visit the area in and around Normandy or Bastogne, we would be willing to share our experiences or trip itinerary with you, which may help to make your travel through the area easier and perhaps make the historical experience more valuable.
