History
Melrose (a) meteorite was found by a farmer in Melrose, New Mexico, while plowing. For a couple years the farmer used it as a weight on one of the farm implements. It was here that Nininger found the true nature of the meteorite in 1933 and discovered that the Melrose (a) meteorite had the highest gold content of any meteorite and still does to this date.
What makes this meteorite most extraordinary is that it’s the highest know gold content in any meteorite. 0.0017 oz. gold per ton are acceptable for mining operations, the Melrose (a) samples yielded 0.30 oz and 0.32oz per ton respectively. This could mean that there is an ore-grade asteroid out there with much gold to someday mine.
