14.8 million:  Years ago an asteroid (not a meteorite as many say- they are much smaller) crashed into what is now know as Bavaria, Germany.
24 km:  The diameter of the crater it created, known as the Ries Crater.
45,000 mph (72,000 km/h):  The speed the asteroid was travelling  when it hit our planet.
1.8 million:   The number of Hiroshima  nuclear bombs detinated simultanousley equivilant to the explosion from the asteroid's impact.
10,000 – 15,000c :   Temperatures at the point of impact, the asteroid and target rock/sand immediately vaporised or melted – The moment Moldavite was born.
450 km (280 mi):   Distances this molten fusion of the earths material and the extra terrestrial was ejected downrange of the Ries crater, creating a meteor shower over South Bohemia (Czech Republic) with droplets of this incredible green gem (as can often be seen by their aerodynamic shapes and forms).
1963:   The year when Queen Elizabeth II was presented with a Tiara by the Swiss Government in which the central gem was a natural, un-faceted Moldavite surrounded by Diamonds and Black Pearls, to celebrate her tenth anniversary of her coronation.
There are even theories that it could be the stone of the Holy Grail, the green gem that 'fell from the heavens'.
Classed as a Tektite, it is the only one of 12 that exist on the planet that is of real gemstone quality, excellent when cut and faceted for jewelry. The other tektites are dark brown or black, nothing compared with Moldavite's beautiful green radiance and translucence. In its natural from the millions of years of erosion have created beautiful 'etching' on its surface. Its colour can range from dark forest green to light apple green.
In the last 10 years, as the mines are closing, and as supply diminishes, the price has risen by more than 500% for this rare gem and fakes are becoming more common.
