Tribute to the creator of Robinson Crusoe
Daniel Defoe, who was born in London around 1660, began training as a minister before deciding to become a merchant.
Throughout his life he published pamphlets criticising the social and political evils of England.
In his poem "The True-Born Englishman", which called for more tolerance, Defoe achieved his first literary success in 1701.
Later, he found employment working as a political journalist, and made a life changing decision for financial reasons: he started to write novels.
In 1719, he penned his first book, which became perhaps the most famous adventure story of all time: Robinson Crusoe.
A literary epic that has captivated generations of readers throughout the world and that has seen Daniel Defoe described as the founder of the modern English novel.
The shape of the Limited Edition Daniel Defoe is based on Robinson Crusoe's paddle with which he tried in vain to leave the island on a raft.
Inspired by the colour and structure of wood, the precious resin of the
cap and barrel symbolises Crusoe's island life which was reduced to the
simplest of things.
Fine engravings of typical 18th Century ornaments that decorated book covers at the time, adorn the cap ring and cone.
The elaborately decorated clip in the shape of a feather is reminiscent
of Crusoe's loyal parrot companion, Poll.
Filigree engravings decorate the rings and are based on the stitching of Robinson's clothing which he had to make himself after being ship-wrecked.
The signature of Daniel Defoe, the author, is immortalised as a fine engraving on the cap, rounding off this fascinating Limited Edition in honour of the creator of Robinson Crusoe.
