    Description

Up for sale from my collection is a gorgeous meteorite with g
reen translucent glass from Earth’s Moon!  NWA 10318 weighs 3.3 grams and is
known as a troctolite.  It is highly shocked and many of the dark veins exhibit a translucent green glass when illuminated with a bright light.  Very few lunar specimens feature the green translucence, which is an impact glass known as maskelynite. Maskelynite is a shock-produced glass that forms following an impact, probably the impact that launched it off the lunar surface.
Background: Impact cratering on the moon is a common feature as craters cover much of its surface.
Some of these may be volcanic in origin, but most are meteorite craters made when cosmic debris from elsewhere, most likely the asteroid belt, has been colliding in the lunar surface for billions of years. The heavily cratered terrain from meteoroids, asteroids, and comets traveling at speeds of many miles per second impact the lunar surface creating enough energy to generate shock waves.
