NWA 14714 Martian 0.55g Shergottite Slice From Planet Mars

Description

Item for auction is a 0.55g slice of NWA 14714 Martian Shergottite meteorite that was purchased in January, 2021 by Mark Lyon from a Northwest African dealer in Morocco. Four identical appearing stones with desert weathered exteriors. Saw cut reveals a medium grained cumulate with light and dark crystals, with the darker crystals coinciding with areas that appear to be shock darkened. Numerous black shock melt pockets are present.
Petrographical examination, performed by A. Ross, UNM; D. Dickens, NMMS; C. Agee, UNM,  of a polished microprobe mount shows ~50% igneous-zoned subcalcic augite and ~45% maskelynite, with ubiquitous Ti-magnetite, ilmenite, merrillite, and troilite making up the remainder. Shock melt was observed. Geochemistry consists of Pigeonite Fs49.4±1.9Wo13.5±1.4, Fe/Mn=35±2, n=10; augite Fs28.0±5.6Wo32.7±1.4, Fe/Mn=31±3, n=10; plagioclase An53.6±0.7Ab45.4±0.8, Or 1.0±0.1, n=6. Classification: Martian basaltic shergottite. This specimen would make an awesome addition to any collection and comes in a quality labeled display case along with a Big Kahuna Meteorites Certificate of Authenticity / Specimen Card.
