    Description

Item for auction is 2.26g crusted slice of NWA 6577 Howardite meteorite that was found in North West Africa and purchased out of Erfoud, Morocco in December 2010, with 770g total known weight (TKW) in one stone. This meteorite was analyzed by Tony Irving, who reports it to be a Polymict breccia composed of lithic and mineral fragments derived mostly from basaltic and cumulate eucrite lithologies, plus sparse (<10 volume%) diogenitic orthopyroxene. Exsolved pigeonite consists of exsolution lamellae of clinopyroxene (Fs
    26.7-26.8
    Wo
    43.4
    ; FeO/MnO = 28.2-31.1) within host orthopyroxene (Fs
    59.3-61.3.7-2.1
; FeO/MnO = 29.8-30.2). Other minerals are homogeneous pigeonite (Fs
    59.8
    Wo
    19.0
    ; FeO/MnO = 31.6), orthopyroxene (Fs
    21.5
    Wo
    2.4
; FeO/MnO = 29.1), calcic plagioclase, silica polymorph, ilmenite and troilite. This stone looked like it had everything but the kitchen sink thrown in - I would have guessed it to have been a howardite. But I am not complaining because as you can see, it is quite an impressive meteorite.
